Merzouga Camel Trek and Desert Camp: What to Expect

Merzouga camel trek guide: how long the ride lasts, what the desert camp is like, what to wear and pack, sunrise on the Erg Chebbi dunes and useful tips.

A Merzouga camel trek is the highlight of most trips to Morocco: you ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, spend the night in a desert camp and climb a dune at dawn to watch the sun rise over the Sahara. Here is what to expect so you can enjoy every moment.

How the camel trek works

Your driver brings you to the edge of the dunes in the late afternoon. You leave your main luggage in the vehicle and keep a small bag for the night. A camel man leads the caravan into the dunes; the ride to the camp usually takes about an hour, timed so that you watch the sunset from the sand.

The desert camp

Camps are made of Berber tents set between the dunes, with beds and blankets. Depending on the category you choose, tents can have a private bathroom. Dinner is usually a tagine, and evenings often end around the fire with drums and a sky full of stars.

Sunrise and the way back

Early in the morning, climb the nearest dune for sunrise – it is one of the most beautiful moments of the trip. After breakfast you ride back to the village, meet your driver and continue your journey to Fes, Marrakech or the Todra Gorges.

What to wear and pack

  • A scarf (cheche) against sun and sand, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • A warm layer: from November to March desert nights can drop close to 0 °C.
  • Closed shoes or sandals you can easily empty of sand.
  • A small torch or phone light, and cash for drinks and tips.

Is it comfortable?

Camel rides are slow and gentle but you feel the movement, especially going down the dunes. If you prefer, you can walk part of the way or ask us about reaching the camp by 4×4.
