Merzouga or Zagora? It is the most common question we receive from travellers planning a desert trip from Marrakech. Both offer a camel ride and a night in a desert camp, but the landscape, the distance and the number of days are very different. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose.
The dunes
Merzouga sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi, a sea of golden sand dunes that are among the highest in Morocco – this is the Sahara of postcards. Zagora, at the end of the Draa Valley, has smaller dunes surrounded by stony desert and palm groves. If tall dunes are your dream, choose Merzouga.
Distance and days
| Merzouga | Zagora | |
|---|---|---|
| From Marrakech | ≈560 km, 9–10 hours | ≈360 km, about 7 hours |
| From Fes | ≈470 km, 7–8 hours | Far, not practical |
| Minimum trip | 3 days from Marrakech, 2 days from Fes | 2 days from Marrakech |
What you see on the way
Both routes from Marrakech cross the High Atlas on the Tizi n’Tichka pass and pass the fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou (a UNESCO World Heritage site). The Zagora road then follows the palm groves of the Draa Valley, while the Merzouga road continues through the Dades and Todra Gorges.
Our recommendation
- Short on time, starting in Marrakech: the 2 days Marrakech to Zagora desert tour.
- The classic Sahara: the 3 days Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour, or 4–5 days for a gentler pace.
- Starting in Fes: always Merzouga – see the Merzouga desert tour from Fes.

Frequently asked questions
Is Zagora the real Sahara?
Zagora is part of the Saharan region, but its dunes are smaller than the great ergs like Erg Chebbi in Merzouga.
Can I go to Merzouga in 2 days from Marrakech?
It is possible but means two days of about 9–10 hours in the car each; we recommend at least 3 days.
