Day 1: Marrakech – Imlil – Sidi Chamharouch – Toubkal Refuge

Your driver picks you up in Marrakech in the morning. After about 1.5 hours, we reach Imlil, at 1,740 m, where you meet your mountain guide and the mule that carries the bags. First, we walk through the village of Aroumd and cross the valley floor. Then, the path climbs to the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, where we stop for lunch.

In the afternoon, we continue up the valley to the Toubkal Refuge, at 3,207 m. The walk takes about 5 to 6 hours in total. In the evening, you have dinner and go to bed early.

Overnight

Toubkal Refuge, in a shared dormitory, with dinner and breakfast.

Day 2: Toubkal summit – Imlil – Marrakech

We start very early, usually before dawn. The climb to the summit takes about 3 to 4 hours, on a steep, rocky path. At the top, you enjoy views over the whole High Atlas and, on clear days, as far as the Sahara.

Afterwards, we walk back down to the refuge for a break, and then continue to Imlil for a late lunch. Finally, your driver takes you back to Marrakech, where you arrive in the evening.

  • FitnessYou need good fitness: the summit day is long and steep, with about 960 m of climb and 2,400 m of descent.
  • AltitudeAbove 3,000 m, some people feel headaches or tiredness. Drink water and walk slowly; the 3-day trek is better for acclimatisation.
  • WinterFrom about November to April, the summit is often covered in snow. Then crampons and an ice axe are needed.
  • RefugeThe refuge has shared dormitories, blankets and hot meals, but it can be busy in spring and autumn.
  • What to bringHiking boots, warm layers, a windproof jacket, a hat, gloves, a head torch, sunscreen and a sleeping bag.

Local Expert Tip

Leave your big suitcase at your riad in Marrakech and carry only a light daypack: the mule takes the rest. Also, start the summit day slowly; the first hour is the hardest.
