How to Get from Marrakech to Merzouga: Route, Distance and Stops

How to get from Marrakech to Merzouga: distance, driving time, private tour, car, bus or flight, plus the best stops on the way to the Sahara dunes.

If you are wondering how to get from Marrakech to Merzouga, the short answer is by road, over the High Atlas. The Erg Chebbi dunes are about 560 km from Marrakech. As a result, most travellers split the trip over two days and stop at the highlights on the way. This guide compares your options, the route and the best stops.

In short: about 560 km and 9–10 hours of driving without long stops. A private tour of 3 days or more is the most comfortable way to go.

Marrakech to Merzouga: distance and driving time

Route Distance Driving time
Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka – Ouarzazate – Dades – Todra – Merzouga About 560 km 9–10 hours without long stops
Return via Rissani – Alnif – N’Kob – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate About 560 km 9–10 hours without long stops

In practice, photo stops, lunch and visits add several hours. For this reason, we never recommend doing the drive in one day.

Ways to travel from Marrakech to Merzouga

Private tour with a driver

This is the easiest option. Your driver collects you at your riad, stops wherever you like and takes care of the camp and the camel ride. Moreover, you see Ait Ben Haddou and the gorges on the way. See our 3 days Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour.

Self-drive with a rental car

The roads are paved, but the Tizi n’Tichka pass has many bends. In addition, the last part to the camp is on sand, so you still need a 4×4 transfer or a camel ride. Drive in daylight and plan at least one night on the way.

Bus

Supratours and CTM run long bus journeys towards the desert, often overnight and with changes. It is the cheapest option; however, it is slow and you miss the stops on the way.

Flight to Errachidia

Errachidia has a domestic airport about 130 km from Merzouga, with flights from Casablanca. Still, you need a transfer from the airport, and you miss the High Atlas and the kasbahs.
