  • FitnessYou need reasonable fitness for 5 to 9 hours of walking a day. No climbing skills are needed in summer.
  • AltitudeThe extra night helps your body adapt. Still, drink plenty of water and walk slowly above 3,000 m.
  • WinterFrom about November to April, the high passes and the summit can be snowy; crampons and an ice axe are then needed, and the route may change.
  • RefugesSimple mountain refuges with shared dormitories, blankets and hot meals.
  • What to bringHiking boots, warm layers, a windproof jacket, a hat, gloves, a head torch, sunscreen and a sleeping bag.

Local Expert Tip

On day two, take your time on the climb to the Aguelzim pass and enjoy the views: walking slowly here is the best preparation for the summit the next morning.
