How to Get from Fes to Merzouga: Route, Times and Best Options

Wondering how to get from Fes to Merzouga? The Erg Chebbi dunes are about 470 km south of Fes, across the Middle Atlas. It is a long but beautiful road, so choosing the right option makes a big difference. Here is everything you need to know.

In short: the drive takes about 7–8 hours without stops. A private driver with one or two nights in the desert is the easiest and most comfortable option.

The route from Fes to Merzouga

The road climbs to Ifrane and Azrou, crosses the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas and reaches Midelt. Then it follows the Ziz Valley, with its long palm grove, to Errachidia and Erfoud. Finally, you reach Merzouga at the foot of the dunes. In winter, snow is possible around Ifrane and Midelt.

Option 1: private driver or tour (recommended)

With your own driver, you stop at viewpoints, the cedar forest and the Ziz Valley, and arrive in time for the sunset camel ride. For example:

Option 2: bus

Some buses link Fes with Rissani or Merzouga, often at night and with long journey times. However, you still need to book a camp and the camel ride on arrival. It is cheaper, but much less comfortable.

Option 3: renting a car

It is possible, but the roads are long, and the last part to the camp is on sand. Many travellers prefer to leave the driving to a local driver.
