The best time to visit Morocco is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the cities are warm but not hot and the Sahara is comfortable by day and cool at night. Still, Morocco is a year-round destination: winter is mild on the coast and sunny in Marrakech, and summer works well if you plan the desert around sunrise and sunset. This guide explains what to expect in each season so you can choose the right month for your trip.

Spring: the best time to visit Morocco for most travellers
From March to May the countryside is green, the High Atlas still has snow on its peaks and the desert is at its most comfortable. It is the perfect season for a classic route such as the 3 day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga or a longer crossing like the Marrakech to Fes desert tour. In May the Roses Valley near Kelaat M’Gouna celebrates the rose harvest with its traditional festival.
Summer: hot inland, cool on the coast
June to August is hot in Marrakech and Fes and very hot in the Sahara. If summer is your only option, it still works: we start the drives early, plan the camel ride for sunset and the walk on the dunes for sunrise. Combine the desert with the cooler Atlantic air of Essaouira – our day trip to Essaouira is a good escape from the heat of Marrakech.
Autumn: perfect for the Sahara
September to November brings warm days, clear skies and date harvest season in the palm groves of the Draa and Ziz valleys. It is one of the best periods for a Morocco desert tour, with comfortable temperatures for camel rides and starry nights in camp.
Winter: sunny cities and cold desert nights
December to February is quieter and often sunny in Marrakech. The High Atlas can receive snow, and the Tizi n’Tichka pass occasionally closes for a few hours after heavy snowfall. Desert days are pleasant, but nights in camp can drop close to freezing, so pack warm layers. Winter is a great time for the imperial cities – see our 7 days Morocco tour from Marrakech.
Ramadan and public holidays
During Ramadan, which moves about 11 days earlier each year, many restaurants close during the day and the rhythm of life changes, but tours run normally and evenings are lively. Check the dates for your travel year before booking.
So, when should you go?
- First trip with the desert: April, May, October or November.
- Cities and coast, fewer crowds: December to February.
- Families in school holidays: summer works if you plan the desert early and late in the day – see our Morocco family tours.
