Taking the ferry from Spain to Morocco is one of the easiest ways to start a Morocco trip. The Strait of Gibraltar is only about 14 km wide at its narrowest point. Therefore, the crossing is short, and you can be in Tangier in about an hour. This guide explains the main routes, which port to choose and what to do when you arrive.
In short: Tarifa – Tangier city port takes about 1 hour and lands in the centre. Algeciras – Tanger Med takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours and lands about 45 km from Tangier.

Tarifa or Algeciras: which port should you choose?
Choose Tarifa if you travel on foot
The Tarifa ferry arrives in the centre of Tangier. As a result, you can walk to the medina or meet your driver at the port gate.
Choose Algeciras if you travel by car
Algeciras has the most sailings and good facilities for cars. However, Tanger Med is outside the city, so plan your onward transport in advance.
Tips for crossing the Strait
